(elephant noise) (donkey noise) hey candidates! answer the call already. the time has come to make a choice... about which candidate can actually make a difference for you. in a world as complex as this, we need a president as experienced as hillary. in the situation room... at the negotiating table... and always on your side... fighting for children and families. with a real plan to get incomes rising... ...reduce drug prices... ...win equal pay for women... ...and protect social security and medicare for seniors.

rumors in terms of how the fbi is upset with the administration on this. i think that is one of the keys to see what you hear out of the fbi on this. here's what i don't think it helps mrs. clinton, the question of the honesty and trustworthiness which is been a problem for her here in iowa and across the nation.

because they know she is the one they can't beat. all of this has to do with that. his father's honest and trustworthy, let's take a step back. for one year now, 100 percent of the incoming attacks have been directed at hillary clinton, none of them have been directed at bernie sanders. >> as president obama said, if bernie sanders were to win iowa, then for the first time, the press would do the vetting job with him like they have done the past year and republicans with their attacks the whole year. of course it is taken a poll. when it becomes one person against another person, for example, hillary clinton versus donald trump in a general election, it would be a whole different. >> the other thing is this, what's come out this week hasn't come out from the republicans and the question the reclassification is not for the republicans.

and it was like a wrestling match. it was protesters with whistles and trump yelling at them. someone through a tomato. i walked away thinking, maybe none of these people are going to caucus. with trump, it is all about can they get their people out pitta did the organization i think organization is there, you have to rely on the person being motivated to return out on caucus night and that is the big? >> as far as we know, it sounds like more of a factor for tuesday. will go back to cragin lori as we look ahead to a snowstorm hitting our state law for caucus night. one presidential candidate has been working through it. new jersey governor, back on the campaign trail. he had to deal with his state getting to the 18 inches of snow

where a good job is not a wish, but a reality. where women receive equal pay and a living wage is paid to all. an america where after a lifetime of labor, there is time for rest and grandchildren. a nation that defends our people and our values, but no longer carries so much of that burden alone. i know we can create that america if we listen to our hearts. and that journey begins here in iowa. i'm bernie sanders. i approve this message, and i ask you to join with us at the caucuses on monday night.

he has had to be a multitasker, they had a huge snowstorm on the east coast, chris christie had to leave the campaign trail to attend to that in new jersey. he's back out there in iowa this weekend. mike, chris christie has talked about wants to be the topic of honor when the numbers come in on monday night, can he do that? >> it looks like he can, the problem that they all have, six months ago, a year ago the talking about the fact that we were looking at people with experience and particularly, governors that tend to be, we can just select the trek chief executive.

8:26 am
run anything in government or consequence before, we want someone who is ready and been tested, both being seven years in the chief federal prosecutor in new jersey, after 911 and six years as governor of one of the bluest states of the country, bringing conservative reform to that state. we want someone to build something to make things better in our country and and some of the frustration, we have experience doing that and we are the right person to take. >> will be standing next to terry branstetter later today, some of the key people over the years are now working on your campaign, will this be a wink and a nod ticket you having his endorsement? >> i'm very pleased that the governor is going to join me tonight in west des moines, introduce me and join me at my townhall meeting, there's no question in my mind that the governor has great respect for

cases they've grown steadily over the course of the campaign. he's been winning over people promising among other things, free tuition for students, healthcare for everybody with a medicare for all plans and here's how sanders told me the single system would work. >> can we talk about your health care plan. explain to us, medicare for all concept as you know we have a lot of people who work in the insurance industry in our state pitt we want to know how this works. private insurance companies, are they gone? >> this is a motive for a medicare for all, the understanding that america today we have 29 million people that is zero coverage more that are underinsureda large deck "-right-double-quote large co-pays. turns out we do not only pay the highest prices for prescription drugs on earth, we also spend much more per capita on health
8:31 am
any other country. in the united kingdom, they guarantee healthcare to all other people that we spent almost three times as much per person, 50 percent more than the french do. what we need to do is create a healthcare system which number one, guarantees health care to all people as every other major country on earth does comics a cost-effective. i think when we do that, among other things, 29 people have -- 29 million have insurance, we do away with the deductible and copayments gone more people will be utilizing healthcare, you'll see more jobs being created. >> blue cross blue shield, they still exist or don't exist? >> it depends. they could exist to administer the program. >>'s come he's will to generate,

program, that's possible. also look at some of the money involved, doctor, i'm going to less money? >> not necessarily the case. what you may see is a change in funding priorities. right now, we have a major crisis in primary health care in this country. we don't have enough family doctors. >> especially in rural areas. >> rule and urban. what we need to do as a country, i work on this with some success, provide incentive to medical students saying we may not need more inhe state geologist, we need more family
8:33 am
no go financial incentives to do that. we need more dentists in this country who can do family dentistry. we want to encourage that. >> how do you get them to go into these? >> you create financial incentives. it is hard to make if you're a family practitioner, it's hard to make a decent living. we say, oral families are entitled to health care as much is anybody else, will provide financial incentives to those doctor should do that. just like running for president, a lot was made about when we're going to see this guy's medical records. when are you going to open up everything, people want to know what your bank accounts, investments, health records, everything pizza you're healthy guy? >> assist with? of course i am, thank god i am. no worries for folks? >> know. when i was a kid, i was in high school i was a very good

other details to see how he sees outworking. some of these things we haven't seen, some of the details until he got really late into the campaign including health records all the other stuff. how do you look at what's sanders is talking about? >> i think just talk about money and that's the big problem, you look at the tax increases that would be associated with what is proposing and i think that makes a difficult case for americans, especially that they still feel the pinch of the economic recession and so i think he's a very good and underrated candidate, i think that his proposals at the end of the day and that price tag associated with each of them are going to be really difficult if he happens to become the democratic nominee. >> they are tweeting with all of us here throughout the show. for that conversation to keep going, donald trump, ted cruz a

have seen, you're closing argument last night, is a big turnout of thousands thousand less common uandale. one of your closing arguments, it was you're going to unite the party, why do you think you're the guy who can do that? >> first of all we are the ones are trying to do that. no party can win an election if it's divided against itself. our goal, is not just to unite the republican party and the conservative movement, reach out to people who haven't voted for us in the past. we have to grow the movement. we want to grow the movement by taking our argument of limited government, free enterprise and a strong national defense to people who have voted republican or conservative for a long time because they can't convince it we do not care about them. i intend to campaign to people that i are living paycheck to paycheck. that's how i grew up.
8:42 am
two years ago i thought i had done that i would never repay. i tend to reach out to working families. i feel very positive about our chance to grow the conservative movement and when the election could you and ted cruiser going back and forth here quite a bit lately. he is had this mailer that came out. someone say was almost shaving people, pointing out, you haven't voted in the last couple of elections, your neighbors haven't either commit set inappropriate text? it's disturbing could she have people names on them. it's not just your name come it's names for neighbors as well. someone is actually putting out a piece of mail with people's names on it and their voting record on it almost makes sound like an official document pitta think the broader problem is his willingness to say or do anything they get elected. he has been on both sides of
8:43 am
national security. issue after issue. people are starting to catch on to the fact that instead of being a consistent conservative, he's a very calculated. >> talk about immigration. is a fair to say, your responses changed over well? >> the practice of change only way it's not able to passes in one massive comprehensive piece of legislation. you first have to prove to people it illegal immigration is under control that the border a secure and where enforcing our laws pitta think if you do that the american people are going to be very reasonable about what you do some has been here a long time was not a criminal who passes a background check. i just don't think you can get to that stage until you do the first part first, and i think that's the lesson the last ten years. it's only more true today than it's ever been because of the threat from isis and all sorts of other things but if you look at history on your side, you
8:44 am
if we look at the polls, it wouldn't seem that you're going >> i think this is a very different election cycle. we've never had 11 people running competitive election, you have two former caucus members caucus winners in the race, you have one governor, rick santorum, very respectable people then you have three senators have one the most famous people in the world, donald trump three former governors, this is a very credible field of candidates. i don't think you're going to have real clarity in this race until the field narrows a bit and i think that will start happening, i will play a part in that new hampshire will play apartment. by the time were in early march, this will be a much more narrow field. >> when you're talking to people, i'm curious if your age of a comes up. i've talked to people who like you because they think that a younger guy, you look a lot different than your party's recent nominees if you look at
8:45 am
i said he's just a kid. think people think i'm younger than i really am. i was not the youngest person jindal was. ted cruz and i are only five months apart. i haven't lived as long as some of the people running, but i'm proud that what i've done. speaker the florida house come we achieved real things in the florida house. we balance our budget in the middle of an economic downturn without raising taxes, we papsed what is today model legislation for the country on internet domain abuse in the us senate, i've just recently been a bipartisan way, pass sanctions on. brought about accountability to the va, working on better bernie sanders with that issue. i'm proud of the work we've done, i got rid of the bailout fund led the effort to wipe that out. i'm proud of what we've achieved. this is about the future, not about the past. as a look on in the country

century. >> give us your closing pitch. >> my closing pitch, this selection is a turning point in american history, it will either be the year which american rear great and will be greater than we've ever been or will be the right now in both parties a put us on in our children with a first-generation to inherit diminish country. i'm running for president because required to make the right choice when i'm president. all unite the conservative sanders or hillary clinton when i'm president, america squint to made a special. ever been. are you going to be crews on caucus rate? >> he is a for honor. he's gotten every endorsement he wanted, he's been in iowa for months, his campaign is saying they're going to win. we know it's an uphill climb, but we feel good about our chances in the support we will have on monday night. >> three months ago with ben

but it's a fairly strong third. you could make an argument that once you get past new hampshire, get into nevada, you get to florida, florida is winner take all, that could be where he makes his stand, if you will let's bring in two of our states more prominent bloggers. let's start with you on this. are democrats afraid of marco rubio? >> i think certainly he is the candidate of the democrats are probably least like to face, i think hillary clinton would be well positioned to win hundred 70 electoral votes. i was a little surprised that marco rubio wasn't coming on stronger in the des moines register poll. i had a author contributor post for you look at 35 years of late iowa caucus polling. has very common for some candidates come out of nowhere, rubio seems like the candidate to come out of nowhere and have the surprise showing. that didn't show up in that

still think rubio has a great shot at being the surprise opposite. >> we need to bring you back in here. the one thing that i have noticed, talking to some people, politically you can find some daylight between crews and rubio on some of these issues, i met people who like the generally shot aspect of those two seem to be going back and forth on crews and rubio pitta think there's any question about that. i was at a swim meet yesterday in brooklyn, iowa and talk to some republican friends, but a half dozen come off of him who had not completely made up their mind. the one name that was in the mix for everyone of them was rubio. for some of them it was rubio or crews but it's interesting even though i don't think they're going to share thanksgiving dinner with each other this year, there is some of that. pitta think craig makes a good point. there was still, 9 percent undecided?
8:55 am
but you have people that are with other candidates that are looking at rubio and among those 9 percent, i wouldn't be surprised to see a significant number of those toward rubio, which could make a difference. if it gets 18, 19 percent that's a big difference. >> here late, it seems that cruz is focusing most of his attention on rubio, you had the whole crews/top trump thing a while. set the right called and left rubio? >> you asked exactly the right question. it's very clear that ten days ago, two weeks ago, ted cruz thought he could be donald trump in this fire was aimed in that direction and it's very clear that today he thinks he cannot be donald trump and his focus has been on rubio to make sure that rubio doesn't slide by him in the second place. i agree with what everyone has said it is felt as if

is challenging voters they count the minutes of talk time from republican presidential debate in des moines thursday night. ben carson got six minutes 11 seconds. it was about half of what ted cruz and marco rubio got. carson at one point was leading the polls. had an event in west des moines last night, he was talking about the need for a proactive foreign policy. i wanted to talk to more about what all of the city mean. >> from a broad sense, how do you describe to people what you're foreign policy would be? >> from a broad sense my foreign policy is being proactive rather than reactive. and what we've been more recently is just reacting to other people are doing. i look at the iranians nuclear
8:58 am
less than stellar to put it mildly, but you have to also look at the implications not only does it provide a pathway for them to become a nuclear state and for somebody who says deaths israel, death to america. that's a lasting we ought to be doing. think about the implications of that. went to the people in the arabian peninsula think united emirates, egypt, jordan, and sickly just him stab them in the back at the same time, we are asking them to be our boots on the ground in the coalition to fight isis pitt this kind of just jointed foreign-policy doesn't make any sense of heard some people who say that when the world hears that we

figure out how to vet them that we should be able to potentially go into mosque an event investigate. over time, or going to see is almost this worldwide christians versus muslims kind of holy war thing and it's going to tour the world apart. are we in danger of that happening? >> i think i have to do is be intelligent. i have to use common sense. i'm not for banning anybody based on religion, but we obviously need to have better screening techniques pity see what happened in san bernardino with the screening techniques, they obviously don't work. it's not just a matter of people coming from syria, or iraq, a lot of tears could come from sweden are friends. we really need to look at who they are and where they've been

9:00 am
>> out of it he talks about the screening techniques, how do you do that? how do i know if i just met you, you're at the statue of liberty, how do we know if you have bad intentions? how do we figure that out? >> we utilize all the resources that we have, we use our experts in homeland security, our experts in the fbi, secret service, all of these people have experience. the israelis also have a great deal of experience in identifying potential targets. we need to utilize that information in an appropriate way to develop alternative screening. one of the reasons i said we should declare war you know, on isis, on islamic state is it makes us look at this a little bit differently. it makes us think about

and our visa policy, i don't think it's we don't on religious basis, it's be done based on commonsense. everybody is going to hear a lot of final comments from all of you before the folks get together in their precincts on monday night, your closing argument to them is what? they have a lot of choices. >> my closing argument to them is do want to keep going down the same pathway that we been going down with maybe just a little different flavor or t-letter want something that's really different? this country designed for the political class? or was it designed for the citizen statesman? you need to make that choice. you understand that washington is broken that politicians are the ones who broke it, do you really believe that they're going to be the ones to fix it?
9:02 am
obligations to the washington class, to the special interest groups, to the billionaires who want to buy in what will expect any of those people, this country was designed for and by the people. to the people want to take our country back or are they satisfied with the direction it's going in? they need to make that choice. >> the soft-spoken den then carson could still be a factor on caucus night. there it is, 7:00 o'clock tomorrow night. one thing we have to think about come we have two more like candidates, martin o'malley, rand paul, you can tweet along

stay aware what's going on with they're one of the wall street banks that triggered the financial meltdown -- goldman sachs. just settled with authorities for their part in the crisis that put seven million out of work and millions out of their homes. how does wall street get away with it? millions in campaign contributions and speaking fees. our economy works for wall street because it's rigged by wall street. and that's the problem. as long as washington is bought and paid for, we can't build an economy that works for people.

who can get congress to work together? something that's been missing for seven years. let's bring back lori and craig, or two prominent iowa bloggers for their thoughts. if we can rewind a couple minutes come you heard from ben carson. he had some people confused on debate night when he was talking about and one horse country, people were wondering what he was talking about. what is done so far? >> it is been quite interesting to watch. i think early in the summer, this is someone who campaigned aggressively in the state, held some big events and did really well. then he just vanish for two -- three months and it just killed him. i think, he is also not a strong debater who is not good specifics pretty fades away in these debates. all a lot over the span of time, still, 10 percent of the des moines register poll, has a firm
9:11 am
>> why is that? having a good debate performance pretty health still has some strength. >> there's been a super packed organizing on the ground in the state for two years. they have identified really passionate support for him. that matters at the end of the day, there is that grassroots, these to his campaign that other candidates i think are lower may not have. >> a bleeding heart, i want to give martin o'malley coming up, way back in the polls, are unlikely to be running any year, i am extremely long field. every time i've seen them, he's
9:12 am
frequent now support, make them viable, he may end up, doing better in the delegates, than what he was looking in the 20 register poll. >> about 20 seconds left. you've had some experience with some campaigns of the task past, if you are the o'malley campaign what do you tell your people to not abandoning you right now? >> i would tell them, hang in there because it's very possible people in the other group will have an incentive to help us get over that viability threshold. >> thank you for this and all clinton and sanders in the democratic race and national media specially, there is that of the democratics all of our state come he's been over iowa more than anybody else. former maryland governor, martin o'malley, will join us from postal workers to nurses... he's been endorsed for real change: bernie sanders. endorsed by friends of the earth action as "a bold, fearless voice for the planet." the nation endorses bernie saying, "you can trust sanders because
9:13 am
to the financial overlords." the des moines register calls him, "a man of courage and principle." endorsed by council bluffs daily nonpareil because "he would build on obama's legacy and challenge the establishment." i'm bernie sanders and i approve this message. (donkey noise) (elephant noise) (mic screech) there's a big difference between making noise... (mic tap) ...and making sense. (elephant noise)
9:14 am
when it comes to social security, we need more than lip service. our next president needs a real plan to keep social security strong. (elephant noise) hey candidates! enough talk.
9:15 am
>> jerry, i realize you are clinton guy but how do you assess martin o'malley? >> first of all, i know him very well and i have a great deal of admiration for him. i knew him when he was mayor and got to know him particularly well when he was governor. i think about and lori reference this earlier, i think he is kind of in the wrong place at the wrong time. if he had gotten into the left lane of the iowa democratic caucus fight before bernie sanders, it might well be martin o'malley and hillary clinton that we were talking about today
tv-commercial
9:16 am
hillary clinton. he has a terrific record. he is very well present presented but by the time he got active in the race bernie sanders was on the left and hillary clinton was in the middle and there you have it. >> one thing that. >> one thing that has struck me is that if you look at mike huckabee, rick can torment martin o'malley they have been everywhere and the des moines register keeps track of all the events these candidates do, those three have been here more than anybody, and the polls don't reflect their work. >> there is a certain poignancy about huckabee and send santorum the winners of the last two caucuses they have been here a lot. it just doesn't seem to be making a difference this year. but let's give some praise to the martin o'malley's and sent mike huckabee's and rick santorum's and the carly fiorina's that of being been here and talked about issues, they have met people in their living rooms, they have met them
9:17 am
and weathered is 40 or 50 people instead of the thousands that some others have been getting, they have hung in there and they have contributed to the campaign. that is one of the great things about iowa. we get a chance to see and hear from everybody i think they make a difference. >> martin o'malley, we believe we will be talking to in a moment. where grandpa still ahead this hour and of course lived to keep track of the weather. we think we will be all right for caucus night but something to think about on tuesday. we will follow all of those

along with us one of the areas that i've been particularly interested in is the area of children. all of us have a responsibility, to ourselves, to our children, to each other. we intend to be sure that everybody in this room and every child in this state is somebody. no matter where they're born, no matter to whom they are born.
9:19 am
by the values of their parents and the policies of their nation. it's time to protect the next generation, fill the lives of our children with possibility and hope, open up the doors so that every child has a chance to live up to his or her god-given potential. i've spent my life fighting for children, families and our country, and i'm not stopping now. (crowd cheers) i'm hillary clinton, and i have always approved this message. we have heard from the other two democrats in the race so far, hillary clinton and bernie sanders. let's bring in the third maryland's former governor martin o'malley. he is off field and fall feud up
9:20 am
you probably see our countdown clock is not much time before tomorrow night. what is her closing argument to people? >> the choice is really up to the people of iowa. the people of iowa are always race proceeds i believe the country needs new leadership to pull us us together across big divides an in our country. that is what the people of file have done in the past and that's what i'm asking them to do now to make wages go up and make the economy work for all of our people. >> you look at the polls and people bring this up all the time but realistically you're probably not going to win but you still think you can surprise people right? is that fair? >> we are working hard to beat expectations and if we beat expectations here we can turn the dynamic of this race which is what we've been told it's only a two-person race and give the voters a real choice here so i have been all over iowa and the beauty of iowa is even in a day and age when big money plays
9:21 am
make my case from town to town to town and that is the bet we have made. it is on the judgment of the people of iowa, their fairness, their ability, and the values that they attempt to bring people together and lead. >> in other caucus process is a unique beast and you have to be viable on caucus night. i have heard you tell your people to stay strong. >> hopes strong. >> right but this is our strategy. we are telling our supporters to hold strong and that caucus and make the argument that we need to be able to beat whatever candidate the republicans put up in the fall and in order to do that we need new leadership, not someone who is been part of the gridlock washington past so we are telling our people to hold strong and when people start looking around and figuring out how to apportion delegates, i believe we can be the recipients of a lot of reshuffling in that

9:22 am
i am telling our people yes, hold strong. i am the only candidate that is promised to move a us to a 100 percent clean electric grid by 2050. i've been a leader on immigration reform, commonsense gun safety legislation and i've been driving this debate in our party. sometimes ask me if i'm to the left of or right of bernie sanders or hillary clinton and i sam at by sam at the forward of them. i arrived at things before them and part of that is because i've been a governor at the front lines bringing things to get people together and getting things done. >> i notice you seem to have found a following with the latino community. it is not huge in our state but it is quickly growing. what is that connection what he are you going to promise folks that you will be moving forward that is connecting with them. >> i think what is connecting with them and with the young people of our country and the young people of iowa is that i don't talk about comprehensive immigration reform as if it is a
9:23 am
for this group of people. i talk about it as being in our nation's interest. it is in the interest of making wages go up rather than down get 11 million of our neighbors out of the underground economy. it is in our national security interest not to create his shadow society and our country with ever-expanding ever-expanding immigrant detention camps. i think that connects not just to new american immigrants but to young people. you won't find many donald trump immigrant bashers among americans under 30 and that's the issues i'm calling out in this campaign's geek i doubt you can count how many people you've met in our state but what has this process talk you? i'm sure you have learned something from what so simply has told you. >> what has this process taught me? this process has taught me that people are starting to wonder whether or not we have lost we've lost the ability to govern ourselves
tv-commercial tv-commercial
9:24 am
still make better choices. we are already a great people. we have come along way since the crash of 2008 and if we make the right choices with more commonsense wage and labor policies invest in our future by making education possible in america if we square our shoulders to climate change and make it our opportunity, we can actually create a better tomorrow. i find people are on the verge of becoming very despondent that the country is not working for them anymore or for their kids, and when that happens, voting can become an act of protest and not a choice for a better future. i believe a better future is ours and that we are on the threshold of american progress if we bring up new leadership and bring it forward like iowa has before and renew our faith in one another. >> safe travels. i'm surprised you showed up with a jacket. i thought you would at least
9:25 am
to her signature move. >> it's too cold. are six candidates and we still have rand paul. you can still tweet at at 13 in hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm-hmm they've all come to look for america all come to look for america all come to look for america i'm bernie sanders, and i approve this message. one of the areas that i've been particularly interested in is the area of children. we intend to be sure that everybody in this room and every child in this state is somebody. no matter where they're born, no matter to whom they are born. i want to make sure that every child has a chance to live up to his or her god-given potential.
9:26 am
and i'm not stopping now. i'm hillary clinton,
9:27 am
if you're keeping track at home i think we're up to six candidate so far end we want to make it through more than half the field i think. we still have rand paul but this is live to tv remember. let's figure out what's going on with this race and bring back mike and jerry who have been watching all of this. >> can we talk about turn out a little bit? i think some of the national media report is going to be this record and republicans make up 200,000 people but i'm not sure where that's coming from. 120,000 or so is the record but realistically or realistic where we talk about 13140 or maybe 150 of trump people go big? >> we were talking during one of the breaks. i hope there is a great turnout. we need that.
tv-commercial tv-commercial
9:28 am
one of five of every republican. >> it doesn't count the impending independence. >> that's right. i think 150,000 would be a very good turnout. i have seen those same estimates even 170 or 175,000. i suppose it could happen but i don't think it will though i think we will break through 122 easily. >> jerry, back in 20 oh eight with that mammoth obama clinton edwards. >> can we skip onto the next topic? >> she still did well in 20 2008 just not as well. >> actually she did better than anybody in history. >> it just wasn't good enough at that time but it was almost 240,000 people. what is realistic this time? i'm guessing your site does not want 240,000. >> if republicans get 150,000 people built trump will win by 10 points or more and it goes up from there. they never caucus as well as the democrats which may be to their credit. it may mean there are more saying they are more sane but obviously a huge turnout would

9:29 am
trump. on our side, in 20 2008 with eight 2008 with eight campaigns and huge activity there were 125,000 people. this time we have three candidates which would seem to indicate the a lower turnout lower than that but i bet we will be surprised in under that our turnout will be despite having one fifth the number of candidates, approximate to what the republicans have. >> one thing i heard sanders talking about some of his rallies, they've got this big student following. they don't want them to all just show up at their college and caucus at their university because there are only so many delegates so he was encouraging people to go back home and caucus at home. is that practical? >> i think that's a difficult thing to get. >> it makes sense. >> that's a difference up in the democratic and republican system. if it were straw poll at it wouldn't make a difference but it does make a difference, and
9:30 am
not. i just think, look, young people have a lot of things to do they have a lot going on in their lives. to get them to go home to maquoketa or manning or montezuma is not the easiest thing to do. >> you hear people talk about this being a small state, but if you are going to school in northwest iowa and you live in the county or something, it is possible to have a three and a half four-hour drive across this state four hour drive across the state. >> that is a whole. >> whenever someone comes to me and says you're running for governor i say that's great i want to have that conversation with you but first i want you to get up early in the morning and have breakfast in sioux city and burnt dinner in burlington and then come back here. it is massive. >> even when i ran for congress one that was in keokuk and the next day i had to be an in ames and that's only half the state and it is a long haul. >> campaigning is a long haul.
9:31 am
our eight guests joining there are those who say we cannot defeat a corrupt political system and fix a rigged economy. but i believe we need to lift our vision above the obstacles in place and look to the american horizon. to a nation where every child can not only dream of going to college, but attend one. where quality healthcare will be a birthright of every citizen. where a good job is not a wish, but a reality. where women receive equal pay and a living wage is paid to all.

there is time for rest and grandchildren. a nation that defends our people and our values, but no longer carries so much of that burden alone. i know we can create that america if we listen to our hearts. and that journey begins here in iowa. i'm bernie sanders. i approve this message, and i ask you to join with us at the caucuses on monday night. thank you. the american people can't afford to wait for ideas that sound good on paper... but will never make it in the real world. the grandmother who has to choose between paying for medicine and paying rent... can't wait. the single mom who desperately needs a raise... can't wait. the student with a mountain of debt can't wait. we can make real progress, right now. i'm caucusing... i'm caucusing... i'm caucusing for hillary clinton.

he is rand paul, kentucky senator. he is our eighth presidential candidate to join us this morning. he has been all over our state and has made finding 10,000 college students part of his campaign so let's start with that. you have been all over this national tv. >> we have been busy but we have a bunch of college students helping us. we are organizing in iowa and were hoping to get 10,000 students out and we're working hard at it. >> i was with you when you are at the barbershop in des moines just off the state state campus in one legislator pointed out that no one are other side is on either side is ever done this. the outrage that you have done big picture from the party have heard a lot of people praise that.

campaign? >> everyone talks about the christian evangelical vote in iowa and how we are going to get it and this and that. we believe in second chances. we believe in redemption and second chance and that you can be forgiven your sins and be redeemed. i believe the law says that also and that is why we have advocated criminal justice reform. most christians don't think war should be the first resorts, that war should be in self-defense and you should not be eager to fight war. i think those are messages that will resonate in a christian community as well as the african-american community, which is predominantly christian as well. >> they are not there are not a lot of things we hear on both sides what looks like there might be agreement but criminal justice reform does seem to be one of or the exception. our republican governor has also talked about this and tried to accelerate the release of some of these people who have been

think is that consensus? >> i cosponsored a bill with chuck grassley. they will probably be a bill sometime this spring to incorporate some of my ideas, some of 40 bookers ideas he and i have a bill that in solitary confinement for juveniles there's a tragic case in new york where young man committed suicide who was kept in solitary confinement for two years but he also was never tried. he was imprisoned for three years without a trial and that kind of stuff should not happen in america. i think it brings both sides together saying you know what? the war on drugs has had a disproportionate effect on poor people and in particular poor african-americans and i think both parties should get together and fix it. >> you seem to be right on the french were you could be one of those people that is as a surprise on caucus night especially as you move forward. let's go back to this 10,000 college student thing because students and because that is a pretty big goal and you will
9:36 am
if you can actually turn out this many students. >> one of the things that i have advocated is ending the government's surveillance program and young people's lives revolve around communication through their cell phones. they don't really want the government collecting all of their phone records and i am with them on that. they are also aware that kids make mistakes with drugs and they don't think you should be put in jail for that or you're taking away your right to vote or get employment or the opportunity to get employment so i think we have a lot of things in common with kids. kids also, young men and women, fight our wars that i don't think they are eager to be sent back to the middle east for another war. we think the combination of all of those issues will resonate on college campuses. >> tell me if i am right or wrong about this. i feel like when i watched you early in the campaign i heard a lot of good from you and that i felt like you got away from it.
9:37 am
i have been saying for several years that our government is too big, borrows too much, spends too much but is too involved in our lives. the message from me that may have gotten drowned out by others on the campaign trail, what's that guy's name that businessman guys name that businessman guy from new york, he is soaking up what the rest of us use is getting 25 times more coverage than everybody combined so sodas made it harder to get our message out, but i don't think the message has changed. i think that everybody ought to be left alone. >> he didn't get that this morning because you showed up here and he didn't.
